Short Description

The exploration of intervals between principal pitches of a given pitch series is certain to guide students into a thoughtful process of generating melodic ideas. This event uses ideas reflective of the Hindustani classical tradition, in which the perpetual drone generated by the group provides the tonal foundation for individual musical inventions. By exploring the intervallic relationships inherent with a particular scale, students are able to create individual ideas with the support of their class. There is no need to approach the pitch series in the sense of practicing a scale, which is typically a warm-up to the performance of other music. Rather, the drone and the tonal improvisation that ensues are both the means and the end and the process by which group members can play together and individually, all within the very same event.
